Bangkok-Pattaya Getaway

Posted in Pattaya Nightlife
This is a backlog of my holiday getaway during July.

Thanks to a friend of mine who works at a tour agency, I got a pretty good deal to just chill and relax in Bangkok and Pattaya.

Me and my friend had a great time exploring the night life in Bangkok's Patpong and the beautiful beaches in Pattaya. Of course shopping is a must-do there - from big shopping malls like MBK and Platinum Mall to the night markets like Suan Lum and Chatuchak (open only on weekends).

As many of you are probably more familiar than me about the shopping in Bangkok, I am going to recommend some other places that I liked in Bangkok and Pattaya.

Let's start from Bangkok. Many people say that there's only shopping to do, but there are so many beautiful temples in the country state. 2 of the must gos are Wat Pho and Wat Phra Kaeo.

Wat Pho is has a big garden where the huge sleeping buddha lies.

Wat Phra Kaeo (Emerald Buddha) is near Wat Pho and is within the Grand Palace (the ex-residential of Thailand's King). It's not as magnificent as I thought, but the cluster of Wats (temples) that are there makes a really grand sight. There are also several museums within the Grand Palace where you can understand the history of Bangkok.

Taking a boat ride down the Chao Phraya river is something unlike the Singapore river. Ninja boats will suddenly appear to fish money out of you. Don't be conned because their goods are much more expensive than those at the night markets. But it's fun to buy some bread from them to feed the fishes, while enjoying the view of the atap houses and Wat Arun (Dawn).

There's also the world's largest Chinese restaurant called Royal Dragon, whereby waitors blade around in Chinese costumes to serve you food. It's a really big and beautiful place, but the food's nothing exceptional.

Bangkok also boasts a Disney-like theme park called Dreamworld. It's not very big and there's not much rides, but you can relive some childhood with the interesting sculptures and themed environments.

Moving on to Pattaya. Take a boat to some of the offshore islands to have fun with watersports like bananaboat rides and speedboating. My favourite is the parachute ride, where you get pulled like a kite by a speedboat. Really nice feeling and it's almost like flying.

The beaches and water are clean and clear, but not as fantastic as I imagined. Those in Malaysia are probably better if you want to see a 'real' beach with emerald green waters and beautiful corals while you scuba-dive.

The beach town of Pattaya reminds me so much of Chiang Mai. It's really like a club and pub town. Other than the usual bapok shows and thai girl shows, you can go for the less common spider shows - where you see guy and girls make out live in various role plays - not for the faint-hearted and family-oriented.

For the family, you can see the famous Alcazar show, which boasts really beautiful transvestites in elaborate dresses and a good selection of music. It's really hard to believe some of them were males.

The Sriracha Tiger Zoo is another great place to go. It's not just about tigers. Here you can see breath-taking crocodile performances and funny elephant shows. The unique attraction is the tiger mom who raises piglets and the mommy pig who raises tiglets - strange but true.

Although I spent 5 days in the 2 places, I still didn't manage to finish all the places I want - such as eating the nice and cheap seafood at Chinatown, seeing the magnificent view of the city from the Sirroco Sky Bar at the State Tower, and eating at the famous Baan Khanitha restaurant. A good friend of my also recommended this eatery called Chilli Culture.

All these gives me more reasons to return again. Thailand has always given me a carefree and relaxing feeling (although I do not like the tipping and sex culture), and it's really a good place to relax and forget about the hussles and bussles of life. For now, I really miss the Thai massages I had back then. =P
