HIV Situation

The first case of AIDS in Thailand was reported in September 1984. While the early AIDS cases in the country were reported predominantly among homosexual males, subsequently, the virus spread rapidly among injecting drug users, and to sex workers and their clients. As of January 2004, 231,712 AIDS cases had been reported, of whom nearly 80% were in the age group 20-39 years.HIV/ AIDS is now the leading cause of death among young adults in Thailand. About 400,000 young adults, average age 36, have died since the beginning of the epidemic. The male-to-female ratio of reported AIDS cases is 2.8:1. Of the AIDS cases reported to date with a known route of transmission, heterosexual mode accounts for the highest proportion of cases (88%), followed by injecting drug use (6%) and peri-natal transmission (5%). more inforemation
